Do I need to pre-book tickets?

No. Tickets are available to purchase when you arrive on every day we are open. Pre-booked tickets will only be available for our Special Events, as announced.

Do you accept credit and debit cards?

Yes – but there is a minimum charge of £5, We do not accept cards in the Picnic Cafe but do in the Signal Box Cafe.

Do you provide cashback facilities?

No – the nearest cash dispenser is in Saffron Walden

Are there facilities for the disabled?

Ye, we have spaces for disabled parking next to the station platform, toilets and a disabled carriage, which is available on request (only one wheelchair at a time.) We advise you to ring the office before visiting to check the availability and suitability of our disabled carriage.

Are there baby changing facilities?

Yes, a baby changing station is located within the toilet facilities.

Are there covered areas to shelter from bad weather?

We are primarily an open site with limited shelter. Please be prepared with suitable clothing and footwear.

Is there somewhere to leave a buggy/pushchair?

Yes, your buggy can be left on the station whilst on your train ride, however the Fairy and Elf Walk is buggy friendly.

Smoking:

Although we are an open air site there are areas where smoking is prohibited & this includes the use of E Cigarettes. These areas are clearly signed & include all enclosed buildings. We are designed for families with young children & wish to discourage smoking.

Do we accept the Essex Pass?

Yes we do accept the Essex Pass. The offer is only valid on normal running days which excludes Special Events. You will receive 1 x Child Combined Ticket free when purchased with 1 x Adult Combined Ticket. Only one card can be used per party, per day.

Are dogs allowed on site?

Yes, dogs are allowed on site but must be kept on a lead at all times and all mess to be cleared up.

Do you allow open fires or barbecues on site?

No, open fires and barbecues are not allowed.

Is steam guaranteed?

We try our best to run steam engines on Saturdays and Sundays and on other specified days subject to weather conditions. Apart from our Special Event days, the last Steam Train is at 4.00pm

Are there refreshments on site?

An array of homemade hot and cold food and drinks are available from our Signal Box Café using locally sourced ingredients. Ice creams are available from the Gift Shop, they are sourced from local company Saffron Ice Cream. Yum!

Are there any concessionary fares?

0 – 24 Months go free on the Train and Fairy Walk. Carers will also have free entry onto site. Please bring along paper evidence to display when purchasing your tickets or book tickets online and bring the evidence along with you on the day.

Is there a charge for Car Parking?

There is no charge for car parking. We have a limited number of spaces on our main site with reserved spaces for disabled (blue badge) holders. Once all the spaces are taken you will be directed to our overflow car park which is situated approximately 300m away.

Adverse Weather

During adverse weather conditions it may be necessary to suspend train services or close the site at short notice. Please telephone us or check social media before commencing your journey.

What else is there to do?

We have an outdoor Picnic and Play Area which is only open when the site is open, and is available for use by ticket holders only.
Enchanted Fairy & Elf Walk (check timetable for opening dates)
Graham’s Rides provide additional facilities on site which include a children’s vintage roundabout, swingboats and a bouncy castle at a cost of £2.00 per child for unlimited use. (Weather dependent)

When running, the Saffron Walden & District Society of Model Engineers will give you two laps of their track that travels around the Picnic Area at a cost of £1.00 per person.

Our Special Event days usually include more additional activities such as craft making.
